To locate, collect, carry and/or return academic library resources and materials; search the library catalogues under the direction of the Client; photocopy library resources and materials (presenting in enlarged photocopy format if required); scan library resources and materials.

Level Two

Sighted Guide

To use particular techniques to physically guide a sight impaired person through the environment.

Note Taker

To produce an accurate and legible record of the content of lectures, seminars etc in the Client’s preferred style and format.

Text Checker

To identify and highlight errors in written work, and indicate where modifications may be required in relation to spelling, punctuation and grammar, but not academic content, in circumstances where the Client’s use of assistive technology is not appropriate.

Reader

To read relevant course related material to the Client or onto appropriate recording devices as required.

Specialist Assistant  

A flexible role where a Client requires a range of support types consecutively for irregular periods of time.

The Specialist Assistant may be involved in:

Providing assistance with practical and mobility support tasks in educational situations and locations.

Note taking pertinent information as required by the Client.

Directing the Client towards guidance and information, and encouraging adjustment to academic study and routine.

Level Three

Exam Facilitator

To read aloud relevant exam material to the Client, and/or to scribe, writing word for word, the Client’s answers to exam questions.

Practical Facilitator

To provide assistance with mobility and/or practical tasks in educational situations and locations using prior knowledge, skills and experience where specifically required e.g. in a laboratory, technical studio/suite, workshop.

Research Facilitator

To search and select relevant information from an agreed subject matter from a variety of academic sources and materials (books, journals, electronic resources) and present to the Client in the requested format, using an understanding of the topic and relevant ICT skills.

Study Facilitator  

To act as a motivator to the Client, encouraging them to adjust to academic study and routine, through organisational support and reassurance.

To act as a key contact for the Client and provide the Client with guidance and information in relation to the services delivered by, and the connection between, academic studies and/or general university services and/or specialist support services.

Transcription Facilitator

To transcribe from one format (including lecture and seminar notes, oral dictation or audio files) into another agreed format, producing an accurate, full and legible record in the Client’s preferred style and format.

To deliver specialist support, remotely or one-to-one, where knowledge of a particular communication/support technique is required, for example

Study Coach

Study Coach- Specific Learning Difference

Using specialist knowledge of Specific Learning Differences, to deliver one to one skills coaching focusing on the individual’s evolving academic requirements.

Study Coach – Specific Condition or Impairment

Using specific knowledge of the Client’s condition or impairment, to deliver one to one skills coaching focusing on the individual’s evolving academic requirements.

Study Coach – Subject Specific

Using specific knowledge of the Client’s academic subject, to deliver one to one subject specific skills support where additional input is required because of the impact of the Client’s condition or impairment on the academic experience.

To deliver one-to-one training in the use of specialist disability assistive technology hardware and/or software to the Client.
